A study published in the Journal of Nutrition revealed that daily consumption of white mushrooms for four weeks leads to a significant increase in the activity of natural killer cells, a key element in the fight against cancer.
Other studies have shown that shiitake, maitake, turkey tail, and reishi mushrooms activate immune cells, prevent cancer growth, and induce cell death, or apoptosis, in cancer cells.
Mushrooms are also beneficial against hormone-related cancers, such as breast cancer, because they inhibit an enzyme called aromatase, which produces estrogen.
Finally, they are rich in antioxidants, which help protect against oxidative stress and inflammation, two factors that contribute to the development of cancer.
Garlic: A Natural Shield Against Cancer
Garlic is known for its anti-cancer effects thanks to its organosulfur compounds. These compounds have demonstrated their ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce their death. According to studies, garlic consumption offers protection against certain types of cancer, such as breast, colon, lung, prostate, and stomach cancer.
Raw garlic is particularly effective in preventing cancer, as cooking can destroy some of its beneficial compounds. Furthermore, black or aged garlic extract has also proven effective in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. A study of 41,387 women in Iowa found that those with the highest garlic consumption had a 50% lower risk of certain colon cancers compared to those with the lowest garlic consumption.
Berries: A Delicious Cancer Defense
Berries, such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and others, are not only delicious; they are also packed with cancer-fighting compounds. One of the key compounds is ellagic acid. Research conducted by the American Institute of Cancer Research has shown that ellagic acid inhibits tumor growth and uses several cancer-fighting methods simultaneously.
